At least 20 people, including children, were killed as torrential rain triggered devastating landslides across Mirik and Darjeeling hills on the night of October 4-5, 2025. Kurseong alone recorded a staggering 393 mm of rainfall between October 4 and 5 — one of the worst in a decade.

The Geological Survey of India (GSI) had issued an orange-level landslide warning for Darjeeling at approximately 2:15 PM on October 4, hours before the disaster struck. Homes were swept away, roads were cut off, villages were isolated, and hundreds of tourists were stranded. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee announced compensation for victims and planned a visit to north Bengal on October 6. Schools and colleges in Darjeeling were closed from October 8-10 for safety.
