A study from the University of Maryland School of Medicine reported that the MAM01 monoclonal antibody achieved 100% protection against malaria at its highest dose in clinical trials. The antibody neutralises the malaria parasite (Plasmodium falciparum) before it enters the bloodstream through a single-dose administration offering months-long protection.

This is a major advancement over traditional antimalarial drugs and vaccines like RTS,S/AS01 (Mosquirix), which offer only 30-40% efficacy. India accounts for approximately 2% of global malaria cases and 2% of malaria deaths. Rajasthan's Thar Desert border districts of Barmer, Jaisalmer, and Jodhpur are identified as malaria-endemic zones, where such a long-acting prevention approach could be transformative.
