India presented its updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for 2035, building on the achievement of its 2030 targets ahead of schedule. India's NDC targets include 45% emissions intensity reduction from 2005 levels, 50% non-fossil fuel installed capacity, and 2.5-3 billion tonnes CO2 carbon sink. Non-fossil capacity crossed 50% in June 2025, and renewables achieved 51.5% share in daily electricity generation for the first time in July 2025.

However, challenges remain: India's absolute emissions continue to rise, coal dependence persists, and large-scale investment is needed for the energy transition. Experts have proposed that India announce a peak-emission year, target 80% non-fossil capacity by 2035, and begin a phased coal phase-down. India's installed renewable energy capacity has reached over 200 GW.
