Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma inaugurated the International Kite Festival at Jal Mahal, Jaipur, on January 14, 2026, marking the Makar Sankranti festival. The three-day event (January 14-16) was held at the Jaipur Polo Ground and the iconic Jal Mahal grounds near Mansagar Lake.

Professional kite flyers and international participants from over 20 countries joined locals in colourful kite-flying competitions. Cultural performances, Rajasthani street food festivals, and folk music accompanied the celebrations. Events were also organised across seven state divisions, Jaisalmer, and Mount Abu. Makar Sankranti, marking the sun's transition into Capricorn, is one of the few Hindu festivals based on the solar rather than lunar cycle.
