The Geological Survey of India (GSI) officially designated the hill region surrounding Kalinjar Fort in Banda district, Uttar Pradesh, as a National Geo-Heritage Site in March 2026. This is the first national geo-heritage site in the state. The Vindhyan region where Kalinjar is located features ancient rock formations dating back hundreds of millions of years, making it significant for understanding Earth's geological evolution. The fort itself is an ASI-protected monument with historical significance spanning from the Chandela dynasty era. The designation aims to preserve geological features, promote scientific research, and encourage sustainable heritage tourism.
