Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal laid foundation stones for four riverine lighthouses along the Brahmaputra River on March 5, 2026 — India's first inland waterway lighthouse infrastructure project valued at approximately ₹84 crore. The four sites are Bogibeel, Pandu, Silghat, and Biswanath Ghat in Assam.

Each lighthouse will feature 20-meter structures powered entirely by solar energy, equipped with navigation aids for vessel safety along National Waterway-2 (River Brahmaputra). The project supports the Inland Waterways Authority of India's mission to develop NW-2 as a commercially viable transport corridor, reducing logistics costs and carbon emissions from road transport.
