Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was sworn in as Nepal's first-ever female Prime Minister on September 12, 2025, following massive Gen Z-led anti-corruption protests that forced PM KP Sharma Oli to resign. Over 50 people died in the crackdown on protests. Karki, 73, was nominated through an online poll on Discord by protest leaders.

Karki made history in 2016 as Nepal's first female Chief Justice. She unveiled her cabinet on September 15 and pledged to bring peace, end corruption, and conduct fair general elections within six months starting March 2026. India's relationship with Nepal under the Neighbourhood First policy will be a key area to watch as Karki establishes her interim government.
