Pitru Paksha 2025, the 16-day Hindu period dedicated to honouring ancestors, began on September 7, coinciding with the total lunar eclipse. During this period, Hindus perform Shradh and Tarpan rituals to pay homage to deceased ancestors. The period is considered especially significant in Hindu tradition when it coincides with a lunar eclipse. Holy cities like Varanasi, Gaya, and Haridwar witnessed a surge of pilgrims performing ancestral rites along the sacred rivers. The Pitru Paksha period concludes with Mahalaya Amavasya, marking the transition to the festive season with Sharad Navaratri. The Ministry of Tourism and state governments arranged special facilities for pilgrims at major religious centres.
