The Government of Rajasthan imposed a statewide ban on the felling of the Khejri tree (Prosopis cineraria) following sustained agitation by the Bishnoi community demanding stronger legal protection for the species. The Khejri is Rajasthan's state tree and holds immense ecological significance in the Thar Desert, providing fodder, fuel, and preventing desertification.

The Bishnoi community has a centuries-old tradition of protecting Khejri trees, dating back to the 1730 Khejarli massacre when 363 Bishnois sacrificed their lives to save trees. The ban strengthens existing protections under the Rajasthan Forest Act. Violators face imprisonment up to 5 years and heavy fines. The decision was welcomed by environmentalists as a model for community-driven conservation.
