A devastating bus fire occurred on October 14, 2025, near Thaiyat village, about 10 km from Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, killing 26 passengers. The private air-conditioned sleeper bus travelling from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur caught fire due to a short circuit in the AC system caused by faulty wiring.

Of the 57 passengers aboard, many were trapped because the bus had only one emergency exit that became jammed. The bus was registered as non-AC but had been illegally modified. PM Modi announced ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh per deceased and ₹50,000 per injured from PMNRF. The Rajasthan government ordered a comprehensive review of private bus safety and took action against over 2,000 buses.
