The Ministry of Culture launched the Gyan Bharatam Mission (GBM) to preserve, digitize, and disseminate India's vast manuscript heritage, estimated at over five million works. The first-ever Gyan Bharatam International Conference on 'Reclaiming India's Knowledge Legacy through Manuscript Heritage' was held from September 11-13, 2025, at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, with over 1,100 scholars from India and abroad.

GBM was announced in the Union Budget 2025-26, reviving and expanding the National Mission for Manuscripts (NMM) launched by PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2003. It has been approved as a Central Sector Scheme for 2024-31 with a total outlay of ₹482.85 crore, including ₹60 crore for 2025-26. A Gyan Portal has been launched for digital access to knowledge resources, integrating modern technology with ancient Indian texts.
