Italian luxury brand Prada signed an MoU with Kolhapuri artisans and launched a limited-edition Kolhapuri Chappals collection of 2,000 pairs, priced at approximately 800 euros ($930). The handmade footwear, manufactured in Maharashtra and Karnataka, will be available at select Prada stores worldwide from February 2026. Kolhapuri Chappals received Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2019, covering eight districts in Maharashtra and Karnataka. The craft dates back to the 12th-13th century and was originally made for royalty. The chappals are made entirely by hand using vegetable-tanned leather (cow, buffalo, goat) without nails or synthetics. This collaboration is a significant milestone for India's GI-tagged products in the global luxury market.
