Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan released 184 new varieties of 25 crops developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). The new varieties include 60 rice varieties, 50 maize varieties, and 13 oilseed varieties, along with varieties for pulses, millets, and horticultural crops.

The new varieties have been developed for climate resilience, higher yield, disease resistance, and improved nutritional content. Several drought-tolerant rice and maize varieties are specifically suited for rainfed agriculture in states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra. ICAR has released over 6,500 crop varieties since its inception, playing a vital role in India's food security journey from the Green Revolution to the present.
