World Soil Day was observed on December 5, 2025 to emphasise the crucial role of healthy soil in food security, ecosystems, and human well-being. The day was established by the UN General Assembly in 2013 and corresponds to the birthday of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand, who was a champion of soil conservation.

India faces significant soil health challenges — approximately 30% of India's land is degraded due to erosion, salinity, and nutrient depletion. The Soil Health Card Scheme, launched in 2015, has distributed over 23 crore soil health cards to farmers, providing crop-specific nutrient recommendations. Rajasthan, with large arid and semi-arid zones, faces particular challenges with wind erosion and soil salinity in western districts.
