On January 23, 2026, the Indian Army signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, to develop a fully indigenous Artificial Intelligence-based system through collaborative research and innovation. The initiative aims to address emerging challenges in digital information landscapes — including countering disinformation and strengthening information security — and aligns with the Government of India's Atmanirbhar Bharat vision. The partnership brings together the Indian Army's operational experience, IISc's cutting-edge research capabilities, and engagement with domestic industry. The AI system under development will reduce India's dependence on foreign technologies in the defence sector. This MoU is part of a broader trend of military-academic collaboration in India's defence innovation ecosystem, complementing initiatives like iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence) and the Defence Technology and Trade Initiative. The tie-up signals India's commitment to indigenising AI-driven defence solutions and building sovereign technological capacity in critical national security domains.
