The Indian National Congress (INC) marked its 140th Foundation Day on December 28, 2025. The party was founded on December 28, 1885, at Gokuldas Tejpal Sanskrit College in Bombay (now Mumbai) by Allan Octavian Hume, a retired British civil servant, along with Indian leaders including Dadabhai Naoroji and Dinshaw Wacha.

The first session was presided over by Womesh Chunder Bonnerjee and attended by 72 delegates. Initially a moderate platform for political dialogue, the Congress evolved into the leading vehicle of the Indian independence movement under leaders like Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The party went on to form India's first government after Independence in 1947 and has been a major national party for 140 years.
