India and Nepal launched Exercise Suryakiran XIX, the 19th edition of the exercise, from 25 November to 8 December 2025 at Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand. It is an annual, bilateral, battalion-level military exercise conducted alternately in India and Nepal. For RAS and UPSC-style preparation, the topic belongs to international relations, defence cooperation and India’s security partnership with a neighbouring country.

The exercise focuses on jungle warfare, counter-terrorism operations in mountainous terrain, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, medical response, environmental conservation and ground-aviation coordination. According to the PIB release, 334 personnel participated from each side; the Indian contingent was represented mainly by troops from the Assam Regiment, while the Nepal side was represented mainly by troops from the Devi Datta Regiment. These details are useful for prelims because questions may directly ask the exercise name, participating countries, venue, dates and major focus areas.

For mains, the significance lies in the practical dimension of India-Nepal relations. The exercise also connects with disaster relief and UN peacekeeping operations, so its defence-cooperation value is not limited to military training. Exercises such as Suryakiran allow both armies to exchange drills, experiences and best practices, improving operational coordination. Therefore, it should be studied not merely as a military exercise but as a confidence-building and interoperability measure that supports regional stability and stronger bilateral ties.
