The Nobel Peace Prize 2025 was awarded to María Corina Machado of Venezuela 'for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.' The announcement was made on October 10, 2025 by the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo.

Machado, born in 1967 in Caracas, is an engineer and political leader who has led Venezuela's democratic opposition movement. She founded the Súmate organisation in 2002 to promote free and fair elections and conducted election monitoring. Elected to the National Assembly in 2010 with a record number of votes, the Maduro regime expelled her from office in 2014.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised her as 'one of the most extraordinary examples of civilian courage in Latin America in recent times.' At the time of the announcement, Machado was in hiding inside Venezuela after going underground in August 2024 due to threats to her life following the disputed 2024 presidential election. She leads the Vente Venezuela party and co-founded the Soy Venezuela alliance uniting pro-democracy forces.
