NITI Aayog released a policy report titled "School Education System in India: Temporal Analysis and Policy Roadmap for Quality Enhancement", presenting a decade-long analysis of India's school education system. The report was released by NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Suman Bery and CEO Nidhi Chhibber. It covers access, infrastructure, equity, digital integration and learning outcomes across all 36 States and Union Territories. The report notes that India operates 14.71 lakh schools serving over 24.69 crore students, making it the largest school education system in the world. A key finding is the significant decline in government school enrolment, which dropped from 71 per cent in 2005 to just 49.24 per cent in the 2024-25 academic year, indicating a substantial shift toward private educational institutions. This trend has serious implications for equitable access and for the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. To address the challenges, the policy roadmap includes 13 recommendations supported by 33 implementation pathways and more than 125 measurable indicators. The recommendations focus on strengthening foundational learning, improving teacher quality and deployment, enhancing school infrastructure, integrating technology and ensuring equity for disadvantaged groups. The report emphasises evidence-based, outcome-oriented governance of the school education sector, with measurable targets to track progress over time. It serves as a planning tool for States and Union Territories to align their education strategies with national goals and the vision of universal quality education under NEP 2020.
