According to the Global Forest Resources Assessment (GFRA) 2025, released by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Bali, India has climbed to the 9th position globally in total forest area and continues to rank 3rd in annual forest gain. The assessment provides the most comprehensive picture of the world's forests and how they are changing.

India's forest cover has been consistently increasing due to afforestation drives, the National Afforestation Programme, Green India Mission, and community-based forest management. However, challenges remain including forest fires, encroachment, and the quality of forest cover. The report also noted that global deforestation has slowed but tropical forest loss continues at alarming rates.
