On 17 May 2026, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official visit to Sweden as part of his five-nation tour, India and Sweden elevated their bilateral relationship to a full Strategic Partnership. Prime Minister Modi held delegation-level talks with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson in Gothenburg, after which the two leaders adopted the India-Sweden Joint Action Plan 2026-2030. This plan covers political, economic, technological, security, climate and people-to-people domains. The Strategic Partnership rests on four pillars: Strategic Dialogue for Stability and Security; Next-Generation Economic Partnership; Emerging Technologies and Trusted Connectivity; and Shaping Tomorrow Together - People, Planet, Health and Resilience. India-Sweden bilateral trade stood at about USD 7.75 billion in 2025, and over 280 Swedish companies operate in India. The two countries agreed to launch a Joint Innovation Partnership 2.0 and to establish a joint centre for science and technology connecting academic institutions in both nations, expanding cooperation in artificial intelligence, space and geospatial technology, semiconductors and the green transition. PM Modi, PM Kristersson and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen jointly addressed the European Round Table for Industry, a leading pan-European business leaders forum, signalling momentum in EU-India relations and the proposed India-EU Free Trade Agreement. Prime Minister Modi was also conferred Sweden's prestigious Commander Grand Cross honour. The visit marked a significant deepening of strategic, economic and technological engagement between the two democracies, building on a relationship historically anchored in defence, clean technology and innovation.
