The Geological Survey of India (GSI), in its 175th year of operations, has made a breakthrough discovery of naturally occurring hydrogen in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands during its Field Season 2025-26. The discovery is significant as natural hydrogen could become a clean energy source requiring minimal processing compared to manufactured green hydrogen.

During the field season, GSI completed 458 mineral projects with emphasis on critical minerals (230 projects) and rare earth elements (92 projects). The survey also advanced technology capabilities through drone magnetic surveys in Rajasthan and Odisha, and expanded the National Landslide Forecasting Centre to cover 21 districts. GSI handed over 80 geological reports for mineral block auctioning, supporting India's push for mineral self-sufficiency and reducing import dependence on critical minerals used in electronics and clean energy technologies.
