India launched the Responsible Nations Index (RNI) 2026 on January 19, 2026, at the Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi. The index is a collaborative initiative of the World Intellectual Foundation (WIF), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and IIM Mumbai. Former President Ram Nath Kovind presided over the launch as Chief Guest, emphasising ethical governance, inclusive development, and moral responsibility as pillars of sustainable national progress. The RNI is a global composite index assessing countries on four parameters: Ethical Governance, Social Well-being, Environmental Stewardship, and Global Responsibility — moving beyond traditional power- and GDP-centric metrics. India ranked 16th among 154 countries with a score of 0.5515, emerging as the top-ranked Asian nation. Singapore topped the index with a score of 0.6194. The United States ranked 66th and China ranked 68th — signalling that economic or military power does not automatically translate to responsible nationhood. The RNI represents a shift in the paradigm of global benchmarking: it challenges the dominance of indices like GDP per capita, Human Development Index, and Global Power indices by introducing ethical governance and global responsibility as central metrics. For India, the 16th rank validates its emphasis on the 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (the world is one family) philosophy articulated during its G20 Presidency and its positioning as a voice of the Global South.
