The Indian Army signed a ₹293-crore (approximately USD 35 million) emergency procurement contract with NIBE Ltd., an Indian defence manufacturer, in collaboration with Israel's Elbit Systems, to induct the Suryastra rocket system — announced on January 3, 2026. Suryastra is India's first indigenous universal multi-calibre long-range rocket launcher system, based on Elbit Systems' Precise and Universal Launching System (PULS) technology adapted under a Technology Collaboration Agreement signed in July 2025. The system is capable of conducting precision surface-to-surface strikes at ranges of 150 km and 300 km, and is designed to integrate multiple rocket and missile types on a single launch platform, giving it strategic versatility. The system can be rapidly deployed and offers precision strike capability against hardened targets, logistics hubs, and area-denial missions across diverse terrain. The Suryastra contract was processed through the emergency procurement route, reflecting the Indian Army's focus on rapidly bridging capability gaps, particularly along the northern and western borders. The first production units are expected to be delivered within twelve months. The system made its public debut at India's Republic Day parade on January 26, 2026, symbolising India's expanding defence manufacturing capability under the 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) initiative. The procurement marks a significant step in India's shift toward long-range, precision-guided rocket artillery as a key pillar of its land warfare doctrine.
