In a landmark mountaineering achievement, an 18-member Indian Army team from the Eastern Command successfully summited Mount Kangto (7,042 metres) — the highest peak of Arunachal Pradesh — for the first time in recorded history. The team, flagged off on November 3, 2025 from a forward base by the General Officer Commanding, Gajraj Corps, reached the summit on November 26, 2025 via the extremely challenging southern approach, unfurling the Tricolour atop the previously unscaled peak. The expedition was triumphantly flagged in on November 30, 2025 by the GOC-in-C, Eastern Command at Dirang, West Kameng district, and the achievement was later highlighted by the Governor's Secretariat on December 8, 2025. Located in the Kameng Himalayas, Mount Kangto had never been successfully climbed before, making this ascent a historic first. The climbers braved near-impossible conditions including rarefied air, severe sub-zero temperatures, treacherous icy ridgelines, deep crevasses, and near-vertical ice walls. This achievement carries significant strategic and geopolitical significance beyond its mountaineering value — Arunachal Pradesh is at the heart of the India-China border dispute, with China claiming the territory as 'South Tibet' (Zangnan). The summit has been described as India's reply to China's expansionist ambitions in the region, demonstrating that Indian forces have unhindered access to and operational familiarity with the most remote and high-altitude territories of Arunachal Pradesh.
