India's first national Snow Leopard Census is an important current-affairs update for Himalayan ecology, wildlife conservation and science-based monitoring. The Snow Leopard Population Assessment in India programme was carried out between 2019 and 2023, and its findings were released on 30 January 2024. The assessment recorded 718 snow leopards in the country. In the state-wise distribution, Ladakh led with 477 snow leopards, followed by Uttarakhand with 124, Himachal Pradesh with 51, Arunachal Pradesh with 36, Sikkim with 21 and Jammu & Kashmir with 9.
For exam preparation, this matters because it directly connects high-altitude Himalayan habitats, conservation policy and scientific wildlife monitoring. A reliable population estimate helps conservation policy and habitat protection. The assessment used methods such as sign surveys, camera traps and scat analysis. It also shows that wildlife conservation is increasingly based on data and regular monitoring rather than broad estimates alone.
On International Snow Leopard Day, 23 October 2025, India promoted awareness through the #23for23 initiative. The initiative encouraged people to undertake 23 minutes of physical activity to raise awareness about snow leopard conservation and fragile habitats. For static GK, the snow leopard is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. In RAS and UPSC-style exams, this update can be linked to population figures, state-wise distribution, conservation methodology, Himalayan ecology and wildlife conservation.
