Renowned Saraswati veena exponent Dr. Jayanthi Kumaresh has been selected for the prestigious Sangita Kalanidhi award by The Music Academy, Chennai — widely considered the 'Oscar' of Carnatic classical music. The award, given annually since 1942, was announced for the Academy's centenary 100th Annual Conference and Concerts (2026–2027), to be held between December 15, 2026 and January 1, 2027.

Dr. Kumaresh (born 1969) is the first veena player to receive this honour in 34 years, a historic recognition for the Saraswati veena — one of the oldest Indian classical instruments. The award coincides symbolically with the centenary of her legendary guru, veena maestro S. Balachander. With over 40 years of performing career, she is credited with globalising the Saraswati veena, having given concerts across India and internationally, and engaging in significant research and outreach for the instrument.

The Sangita Kalanidhi recipient traditionally presides over the academic sessions of the Music Academy's annual conference, making this a position of both honour and scholarly responsibility in the Carnatic music tradition.
