The Ministry of Power said on 29 April 2026 that NTPC Limited and the Government of Maharashtra signed an addendum to their Memorandum of Understanding for developing pumped storage projects. The release described the step as significant for strengthening clean and reliable energy infrastructure in India. The original MoU, signed on 3 September 2024, covered two pumped storage projects named Amba and Kumbhe with a combined capacity of 1800 megawatts.

After detailed investigations, optimisation studies and technical assessments, the capacities and locations of the projects have been revised. The ministry said the review considered topography, reservoir capacity and project feasibility. Under the addendum, the Amba project capacity has been raised from 800 megawatts to 1500 megawatts. The Kumbhe project capacity has been revised from 1000 megawatts to 1100 megawatts. Together, these changes lift the planned generation potential from 1800 megawatts to 2600 megawatts. The revisions are intended to optimise resource use and improve project viability.

The addendum formalises the revised project parameters within the original MoU, while all other terms and conditions remain unchanged. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Water Resources, Medical Education and Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan, and senior officials from the state government and NTPC were present. The collaboration is framed as a shared commitment to accelerate clean-energy initiatives and strengthen national energy security.
