The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) signed MoUs worth ₹3,000 crore during India Maritime Week 2025 on November 22, 2025, to boost cargo movement, passenger transport, and river tourism in Northeast India.

Key agreements were signed with Assam Petro-Chemicals Ltd (APL) for transporting Methanol and Formalin via the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route, and with the Government of Assam for developing a Water Metro system in Tezpur, Guwahati, and Dibrugarh along the Brahmaputra. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal reviewed waterway projects across Assam, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Tripura, Nagaland, and Meghalaya.
