World Liver Day was observed globally on April 19, 2026 with the theme "Solid Habits, Strong Liver", a campaign coordinated by the world's leading hepatology bodies — the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), the Latin American Association for the Study of the Liver (ALEH), the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (APASL), the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) and the Society on Liver Disease in Africa (SOLDA). The 2026 campaign promotes four practical habits: a balanced diet, regular physical activity, reduced alcohol intake and routine liver health check-ups. According to the campaign briefing, around 2 million lives are lost to liver disease worldwide every year, and an estimated 1.5 billion people are living with chronic liver disease, with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) — the new term for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease — affecting nearly one-third of the global adult population. In India, the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), New Delhi, observed World Liver Day 2026 with a CME programme, a liver health check-up camp, a 15-day social-media campaign and a Delhi screening commitment through Ayushman Arogya Mandirs. Indian hepatologists flagged a sharp rise in early-onset MASLD among 25-40 year olds, linked to ultra-processed foods, sedentary jobs, sugar-sweetened beverages and rising alcohol use disorder.
