The Indian Coast Guard achieved another significant milestone in its modernisation drive on 27 June 2026 by commissioning the new-generation Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) ICGS Akshay into its fleet at Goa Shipyard Limited in Goa. The fast patrol vessel, named Akshay, symbolises the Indian Coast Guard's unwavering commitment, resolve and determination towards safeguarding the nation's maritime interests. The vessel will further strengthen the security of India's vast maritime zone and reinforce the Indian Coast Guard's commitment to maritime safety and the maintenance of a clean marine environment. The ship is capable of undertaking a wide range of Coast Guard operations, including enforcement of maritime law, coastal security, search and rescue operations, protection of the marine environment, and rendering assistance to mariners in distress. Its induction will further bolster the operational capability of the Indian Coast Guard. The vessel was commissioned into the Indian Coast Guard by Smt. Parama Sen, Additional Secretary (Personnel) in the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance. The occasion was attended by Inspector General Bhisham Sharma, PTM, TM, Commander, Coast Guard Region (West), Inspector General Jyotindra Singh, TM, Deputy Director General (HRD), and other senior officers of the Central and State Governments. Designed and built by Goa Shipyard Limited, ICGS Akshay is another important example of indigenous shipbuilding capability and reflects the Government's commitment to 'Atmanirbhar Bharat'. The induction of the vessel into the Indian Coast Guard will further strengthen the country's indigenous shipbuilding capability and bolster India's maritime ecosystem.
