The President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, visited Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh on 21 June 2026 and observed the cheetah management area of the park. The Divisional Forest Officer briefed her about Project Cheetah. Earlier, during her state visit to Botswana in November 2025, the President had witnessed the symbolic transfer of eight cheetahs from Botswana to India; these cheetahs were brought to Kuno National Park in February 2026.

Project Cheetah was launched on 17 September 2022 under the aegis of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and is led by the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA). The project symbolises India's firm commitment to the restoration of biodiversity, and its objective is the reintroduction of the cheetah, which had become extinct in India.

Under Project Cheetah, Kuno National Park has been developed as India's first cheetah reintroduction site because it offers a suitable habitat for cheetahs, an adequate prey base, and minimal human interference. The first batch of cheetahs was brought to Kuno National Park from Namibia in September 2022, the second batch from South Africa in February 2023, and the third batch from Botswana in February 2026.
