January 23, 2026 marked the 129th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, observed as Parakram Diwas (Day of Valour) across India. The Ministry of Culture organised the central celebrations at Sri Vijaya Puram (formerly Port Blair) in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from January 23 to 25, 2026. Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the programme via video conferencing. The main function was held at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Stadium, Sri Vijaya Puram. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands hold special historical significance as the site where Netaji's Indian National Army (INA) first hoisted the Indian tricolour on free soil on December 30, 1943, during Netaji's 1943 visit to Port Blair. The celebrations featured a spectacular drone show, grand cultural performances by renowned artists including Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Papon, Amaan Ali Bangash, and Raghu Dixit, alongside performances by school children. A mega exhibition on Netaji's life and legacy was organised at the ITF Ground on January 24-25. Simultaneously, commemorative events were held at 13 other iconic locations across the country associated with Netaji's life. Parakram Diwas was first declared by the Government of India in January 2021 to honour Netaji's legacy of courage, sacrifice, and patriotism and to inspire India's youth.
