Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the final stretch of the Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar Metro Rail Phase 2 project on January 11, 2026, marking a landmark moment for urban mobility in Gujarat. The newly commissioned Sector 10A-Mahatma Mandir stretch connects two of the most strategically significant locations in the state capital — the Sachivalaya (state secretariat complex) and Mahatma Mandir, the premier convention centre of Gandhinagar.
With the addition of this corridor, the cumulative Ahmedabad Metro network now spans 68 kilometres with 53 stations, making it one of the most extensive metro systems in western India. The Phase 2 project adds five new stations along this stretch, improving last-mile connectivity for government employees, convention attendees, and commuters travelling between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.
The total project cost stands at ₹5,384 crore, funded through a combination of central government grants, state government contributions, and loans from multilateral agencies. The project was executed by the Metro-Link Express for Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad (MEGA) Company Limited.
The Metro Phase 2 is expected to significantly reduce road congestion and vehicular pollution along the busy Ahmedabad–Gandhinagar corridor, one of the most heavily trafficked inter-city routes in Gujarat. Daily ridership projections indicate the network could serve over 4 lakh commuters per day across the full integrated system.
The inauguration aligns with the central government's broader Smart Cities and urban transport vision, and complements Gujarat's ongoing investment in public infrastructure ahead of major economic and industrial events hosted at Mahatma Mandir.
