On March 4, 2026, ISRO and the European Space Agency (ESA) signed the 'ESA-ISRO Arrangement concerning Joint Calibration and Validation Activities and Scientific Studies for Earth Observation Missions' in a virtual ceremony. The agreement was signed by ISRO Scientific Secretary M. Ganesh Pillai and ESA Director for Earth Observation Simonetta Cheli.

The arrangement focuses on collaborative calibration and validation of Earth observation (EO) data from both agencies' satellites, enabling joint scientific studies. ESA's Director highlighted the 'timeliness of the arrangement' in the context of its upcoming FLEX sensor mission, designed to monitor global vegetation fluorescence and assess plant health at a planetary scale.

This agreement reinforces a partnership between ISRO and ESA dating back to 1978, renewed comprehensively in 2002. The collaboration spans Earth observation, navigation systems, ground station support, and human spaceflight initiatives. ISRO has already provided ground station support for Chandrayaan and Aditya missions under earlier cooperation frameworks. For Rajasthan, which hosts ISRO's Western Regional Remote Sensing Centre at Jodhpur and has major arid-zone remote sensing applications, joint EO capabilities are directly relevant to tracking desertification, groundwater depletion, and climate indicators in the Thar Desert region.
