The Ministry of Mines released India's first-ever State Mining Readiness Index (SMRI) 2025, a benchmarking framework that evaluates and ranks Indian states on mining reforms, efficiency, and sustainability for non-coal minerals. The index fulfils a Union Budget 2025-26 announcement. States were categorised based on mineral endowment: Category A (high mineral states) — Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat ranked top three; Category B (moderate minerals) — Goa, Uttar Pradesh, and Assam led; Category C (lower minerals) — Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Tripura topped. Key indicators include auction performance, early mine operationalization, thrust on exploration, and sustainable mining practices.
