India is hosting the Kimberley Process Intersessional Meeting 2026 in Mumbai from 11 to 14 May 2026 in its capacity as the Chair of the Kimberley Process for the calendar year 2026. The four-day meeting opened on 11 May and the day-two deliberations on 12 May, attended by representatives of Kimberley Process Participants, Observers, the World Diamond Council, the Civil Society Coalition and industry bodies, focused on the implementation of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, monitoring and compliance systems, artisanal and alluvial diamond production, trade statistics and measures to strengthen trust in the natural diamond pipeline. India assumed the Chairship of the Kimberley Process on 1 January 2026 and the theme it has set for the year is the "3Cs" - credibility, compliance and consumer confidence - aimed at promoting responsibly sourced natural diamonds through international cooperation. The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme is a joint initiative of governments, industry and civil society launched in 2003 to stem the flow of conflict diamonds, which are rough diamonds used by rebel movements to finance wars against legitimate governments. The Process currently has 60 Participants representing 86 countries, with the European Union and its member states participating as a single bloc. The Mumbai meeting is being coordinated by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry along with the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), and India hopes to use its Chairship to expand certification reforms and digitisation of trade data. India is the world's largest diamond cutting and polishing hub.
