On February 6, 2026, V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port Authority in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, signed an agreement with Central Electronics Limited (CEL) — a Government of India enterprise under the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research — to become the first port in India to initiate installation of an advanced Anti-Drone System. The system is expected to be fully operational within three months.

The Anti-Drone System integrates Radio Frequency (RF) detection and radar-based technologies, providing 360-degree coverage up to a range of 5 kilometres. It offers real-time detection, tracking, classification, and neutralisation of unauthorised drones. The system is specifically designed for the complex operational environment of port infrastructure.

This initiative aligns with Maritime India Vision 2030 and Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, marking a significant upgrade to coastal security. Ports are critical national infrastructure and vulnerable to surveillance, smuggling, and potential terrorist activities via aerial drones. The CEL partnership leverages indigenous technology, advancing the Make in India objective in the defence and security sector. VOC Port, one of India's major ports for container and bulk cargo, handles significant export trade including granite and garments from southern India.
