The keel laying ceremony for Fast Patrol Vessel-4 (FPV-4), Yard 16504, along with the plate cutting ceremony for FPV-7, Yard 16507, of the 14 Fast Patrol Vessel project (Yards 16501 to 16514) for the Indian Coast Guard was held at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai on April 6, 2026. These water jet propelled Fast Patrol Vessels have an approximate displacement of 340 tonnes and are specifically designed to carry out coastal security operations and law enforcement duties along India coastline. Each FPV is being equipped with state-of-the-art machinery including an AI-based predictive maintenance system and multipurpose drones, reflecting integration of emerging defence technologies into frontline maritime platforms. The contract for design and construction of these 14 FPVs was concluded with MDL in January 2024. The indigenous content of these vessels is augmented with a gearbox supplied by M/s Triveni of Mysore and water jets supplied by M/s MJP India, reinforcing the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative within the defence ship building sector. The keel laying of FPV-4 and plate cutting of FPV-7 are being built in consonance with the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and will augment the Bharatiya Tatrakshak presence in the Indian Ocean Region. These vessels will strengthen the operational reach of the Coast Guard for roles including anti-smuggling interdiction, fisheries protection, search and rescue, and responding to maritime emergencies in the Exclusive Economic Zone.
