World Consumer Rights Day was observed on March 15, 2026 with the theme 'Safe Products, Confident Consumers.' Union Minister Pralhad Joshi reaffirmed the government's commitment to protecting and empowering consumers. The day highlighted alarming trends: the share of consumer complaints against e-commerce has tripled from one in 10 in 2015 to nearly one in three by 2024. Additionally, nearly 38% of households reported purchasing packaged food contaminated with insects, fungus or other contaminants even within their expiry date. Consumer rights in India are protected under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, which guarantees rights to safety, information, choice, being heard, redressal and consumer education. The National Consumer Helpline received over 40 lakh complaints in 2025.
