The Indian Parliament passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026 with both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha clearing the legislation in April 2026. The Bill amends the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, to provide statutory recognition to Amaravati as the sole and permanent capital of Andhra Pradesh with effect from June 2, 2024. The Lok Sabha passed the Bill on April 1, 2026, after extensive debate, and the Rajya Sabha followed with a voice vote the next day. The Bill was introduced to end years of political uncertainty and flip-flops over the capital issue that arose after the 2014 bifurcation of the erstwhile united Andhra Pradesh into Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, Hyderabad was designated as the common capital for ten years. After bifurcation, successive governments proposed different capital configurations — including a three-capital model under the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy government (Amaravati as legislative capital, Kurnool as judicial capital, and Visakhapatnam as executive capital). The current TDP-led NDA government, led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, has been pushing for Amaravati as the single capital. The Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly also passed a resolution on March 28, 2026, requesting the Centre to amend Section 5(2) of the Reorganisation Act to provide constitutional recognition to Amaravati. With this amendment, any future attempt to alter the capital status is now effectively ruled out, providing investors and residents with long-term certainty for development of the greenfield city.
