National Pollution Control Day was observed on December 2, 2025 in memory of the victims of the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy, when methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas leaked from the Union Carbide India Limited plant on the night of December 2-3, 1984, killing thousands of people. The day aims to raise awareness about the harmful effects of industrial pollution and the importance of pollution control legislation.

India continues to battle air pollution in major cities. The National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) covers non-attainment cities that fail to meet national ambient air quality standards. Key interventions include deployment of real-time emission monitoring, mechanised road sweeping, and promotion of electric vehicles. Jaipur and Jodhpur in Rajasthan remain focus cities under NCAP.
