The World Athletics Council, at its meeting in Toruń, Poland on March 20, 2026, formally awarded India the hosting rights for the World Indoor Athletics Championships 2028 — marking the first time India will host this prestigious biennial event. The championship is scheduled from March 3–5, 2028, at the Kalinga Indoor Athletics Stadium complex in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

India will become only the fourth Asian country to host the World Indoor Athletics Championships, and the Bhubaneswar edition will be the 22nd edition of the meet. A two-member World Athletics inspection team had evaluated the Kalinga Stadium facility in January 2026, which was built in 2024 and meets international technical standards including an eight-lane 200-metre banked indoor track.

The announcement is significant given India's strategic push to host global sporting events, following its successful hosting of the 2023 Cricket World Cup and the 2023 Hockey World Cup (Bhubaneswar–Rourkela). The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) and the Odisha government jointly spearheaded the bid. This follows India's gold rush at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships and rising investments in track and field infrastructure.

For RPSC RAS context, India's sports diplomacy and sports infrastructure development are relevant to Paper-I (Indian Economy & Planning) and Paper-III (governance/policy), while Rajasthan's athletes from disciplines like wrestling, shooting, and archery reflect state-level sports excellence.
