The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) presented the Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan (SVS) Awards 2025 in New Delhi on September 9, 2025, recognising cities for outstanding performance in ambient air quality improvement under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP). Indore topped the rankings with a perfect score of 200 out of 200, retaining its position as India's cleanest air city for the second consecutive year. Jabalpur secured second place in the millionaire cities category. The SVS framework evaluates cities across parameters including PM2.5 and PM10 reduction, number of pollution hotspots addressed, adoption of electric buses, green belt development, and public awareness campaigns. In a landmark announcement at the same ceremony, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav presented Ramsar Wetland City Accreditation certificates to Udaipur and Indore — making them the first Indian cities to receive this global distinction. Udaipur qualified under five wetlands — Pichola, Fateh Sagar, Rang Sagar, Swaroop Sagar, and Doodh Talai — while Indore qualified under Sirpur Lake. The NCAP, launched in 2019 with a target of 20-30% reduction in PM2.5 and PM10 by 2024 (revised to 40% by 2026), currently covers 131 non-attainment cities. The dual achievement of Indore — SVS top rank and Ramsar Wetland City Accreditation — positions it as a model city for integrated environmental governance in India.
