February 18, 2026 marked the 80th anniversary of the 1946 Royal Indian Navy (RIN) Revolt, a five-day armed uprising (February 18-23, 1946) by Indian naval ratings against British colonial authority. The revolt began as a protest over poor food and living conditions aboard HMIS Talwar in Bombay but rapidly evolved into a broader anti-colonial rebellion.

The uprising spread across 78 ships and 20 shore establishments, involving 20,000 sailors. Workers in Bombay, Karachi, and Calcutta joined in solidarity strikes. The revolt, though suppressed within days, demonstrated that the colonial government could no longer rely on Indian armed forces, accelerating the decision for British withdrawal. The Indian Navy commemorated the event with ceremonies at naval stations across the country.
