Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the redeveloped Batadrava Than at Borduwa village in Nagaon district, Assam, on December 29, 2025. The complex has been developed as Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva Aavirbhav Kshetra. The project cost more than ₹222 crore and covers 162 bighas of land. Its features include a 25-metre-high Guru Asana, a cultural complex, and spaces for Sattriya dance performances.
Batadrava Than is the birthplace of the 15th-century Vaishnavite saint Srimanta Sankardeva (1449-1568). He founded the Ekasarana Dharma and the Sattra tradition of Assam. For that reason, the site is not only a religious place but also a marker of Assam's cultural identity, devotional tradition, and social reform history. Official details state that the construction was carried out in three phases and that symbols linked to the Neo-Vaishnavite tradition were given concrete form in the complex.
For examination purposes, this topic connects culture, governance, and heritage conservation. In prelims, questions may focus on the location, district, project cost, land area, Guru Asana, Sattriya dance, and facts related to Srimanta Sankardeva. In mains, it can be used as an example of cultural heritage preservation, regional identity, pilgrimage tourism, and state-supported cultural infrastructure. In static GK, Sankardeva, Ekasarana Dharma, the Sattra tradition, and Assam's Vaishnavite tradition are directly linked with this current-affairs development.
