The Ministry of Defence signed a ₹2,770 crore contract for more than 4.25 lakh Close Quarter Battle carbines with accessories for the Indian Army and the Indian Navy. The contracts were signed with Bharat Forge Ltd and PLR Systems Pvt Ltd. For exam preparation, the update links defence modernisation, indigenous defence production and the Make in India push.
Close Quarter Battle carbines belong to the small-arms segment used in confined spaces, urban-combat conditions and close-range engagements. Their compact design and high rate of fire give soldiers a sharper response in near-distance operations. The procurement is therefore not just a numerical addition of weapons; it signals modernisation of the combat capability of infantry and other close-combat units.
The static-GK linkage comes from defence procurement, modernisation of the armed forces, Atmanirbhar Bharat and the role of the private sector in defence manufacturing. The government statement says the project will support indigenous defence industries and encourage micro, small and medium enterprises through component manufacturing and raw-material supply. The same defence procurement package also included a separate Heavy Weight Torpedoes contract, so factual questions should not mix the carbine contract with the torpedo contract. In mains answers, it can be used as an example of indigenisation, public-private synergy and employment generation in defence production. In prelims, the amount, quantity, services covered and companies are likely factual hooks.
