Union Minister of State for Fisheries George Kurian launched the National Marine Fisheries Census (MFC) 2025 at ICAR-CMFRI, Kochi. It is India's first fully digitised and geo-referenced fisheries census, covering 1.2 million fisher households across 4,000 marine fishing villages in nine coastal states and four Union Territories.

The 45-day enumeration (November 3 to December 18, 2025) uses the VYAS suite of multilingual Android applications developed by CMFRI: VyAS-NAV for village validation, VyAS-BHARAT for household enumeration, and VyAS-SUTRA for real-time supervision. This replaces all paper-based methods and creates India's most comprehensive geo-referenced marine fisheries database.
