On 18 May 2026 India and the Netherlands deepened their strategic partnership with 17 agreements signed across technology, energy and other key areas, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded the Netherlands leg of his five-nation tour. This was Modi's first visit to the Netherlands since 2017. The visit aimed to expand strategic and economic ties, with discussions covering semiconductors, digital technology, water management, defence cooperation, renewable energy and trade expansion. Semiconductor cooperation was a central focus, given the Netherlands' position as home to ASML, the world's leading manufacturer of advanced lithography equipment essential for chip fabrication, making the country a critical node in the global semiconductor supply chain and a strategic partner for India's Semiconductor Mission. The three-day visit included talks with Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof and meetings with the Dutch royal family. Officials also explored opportunities in logistics, port infrastructure, agriculture technology and green hydrogen projects, areas where Dutch expertise in water management and sustainable agriculture is globally recognised. The Netherlands is among India's largest trading partners in the European Union and a significant source of foreign direct investment into India. The agreements are expected to advance India's priorities in chip manufacturing self-reliance, digital public infrastructure, clean energy transition and resilient supply chains, while strengthening India's broader strategic engagement with Europe alongside the concurrent India-Norway and India-Nordic outreach.
