According to the FAO's Global Forest Resources Assessment (GFRA) 2025, India advanced to the 9th position worldwide in total forest area, up from 10th in the previous assessment. India maintained its 3rd position globally in annual net gain of forest area. As per ISFR 2023, India's total forest cover is 7,15,343 sq km (21.76% of geographical area) and total forest and tree cover is 8,27,357 sq km (25.17%). Top states in forest cover increase include Chhattisgarh (684 sq km), Uttar Pradesh (559 sq km), Odisha (559 sq km), and Rajasthan (394 sq km).
